Where the vans go
Two vans, both out of Unit 6 at Eastgate Works. Two on the road in working hours, one overnight. The times below are measured from the end of the call to the van on your kerb and averaged over last year — not the time we would like it to be.
If both vans are out we say so on the call and give you a time, rather than a slot we already know we will miss. If the time we give you is going to slip, you get a second call before it does.
What a district actually decides
Not the price — the price is the same everywhere and it is on the rate card. What it decides is how long you wait, and whether the part is in the van or is a second visit tomorrow.
| District | Daytime | Night | Depot | Parts held in the van |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eastgate and the Quays | 35 min | 55 min | Unit 6 | Most |
| Barrow Hill | 40 min | 60 min | Unit 6 | Most |
| Netherfield | 50 min | 75 min | Unit 6 | Common sizes only |
| Ashcombe and the villages | 70 min | 95 min | Unit 6 | Common sizes only |
| Past the ring road | by arrangement | not overnight | — | — |
What is under each of them
Drainage is local. What went in the ground in a district, and when, decides what goes wrong in it — so this is worth more to you on the phone than a map is.
Eastgate and the Quays
Victorian terraces on the hill, mostly 100 mm salt-glazed clay to the front. Half our winter jetting is on four streets off Quay Road, where the runs are long and shallow.
Barrow Hill
Interwar semis, 100 mm clay into shared chambers at the boundary. Shared drains mean shared bills, and we will tell you which side of the chamber the blockage is on before you argue about it.
Netherfield
Nineties estates on 110 mm plastic with rest bends at every corner. Plastic does not collapse; it goes out of fall where the ground moved, and that is a survey job rather than a jetting job.
Ashcombe and the villages
Long private drives, private pumping stations and, at Ashcombe Green, three properties still on a shared septic run we do not work on. We will say so on the call rather than at the gate.
Past the ring road
We will book daytime work out here and we will quote the travel in it. We will not send the only overnight van an hour away from the town it covers.
The van stock
- 15, 22 and 28 mm copper, compression and press
- Push-fit in 15 and 22 mm, and the tool for both
- 110 mm plastic, bends, couplers and one 600 mm chamber riser
- Traps, ballcocks, cistern valves, tap cartridges by pattern
- Rods, plunger set, hand auger, 15 m drain camera
- Jetter on the day van only; the night van carries rods
- Freeze kit, so a stopcock that will not turn is not the end of it
Common sizes only
Netherfield and Ashcombe are far enough out that a second trip is expensive for both of us, so we ask more on the phone before we set off — the make on the boiler, the size of the pipe if you can see it, and a photograph if you can send one.
Where we will not go
Past the ring road overnight, and anywhere at all for work on the gas side of a boiler, a sewage treatment plant or a septic tank. We hold the registration for water, not for gas, and we will give you the number of someone who does.
